Book I ends on a chapter called Departure again. That title is honest. Dawn Lucius closes one door and walks straight toward the next. Federation War is complete on its own, but it is not the end of his road home.
This note is for readers standing between the two books. It says what you should carry over, and it keeps Book II's turns off the page.
What Book I settles
By the end of Federation War, you know what a Star Map Draftsman is, why the three federations wanted one, and what White Crystal really sells. You have watched Dawn negotiate when he would rather be repairing something. You know the cost of the job, and you know who he is doing it for: his son, Stacean.
If any of that feels fuzzy, the Draftsman role, White Crystal, and the three federations lore pages are short refreshers.
Four things to keep in your pocket
The Star Source. Dawn still holds it. The role did not end with Book I. It only got heavier.
Dark matter. In Book I, dark matter gathers wherever a Draftsman appears. Hold on to that rule. Book II opens by breaking the pattern: an Ashton scientist the others call Sakya shows Jonathan that dark matter is fading. If it gathers around Draftsmen, people will ask whether Draftsmen are to blame. See Dark matter is vanishing. It's fiction framing, not a physics lecture.
White Crystal. Book II's own blurb says it returns. Immortality sold as governance does not quietly leave the table.
Stacean. The father-son thread is the spine of both books. The Book II blurb already tells you he is taken, so I'm not spoiling anything. What I won't tell you is how Dawn answers.
The tone shift
Book I is a political road trip: ships, planets, negotiations, a man learning what his title means. Book II zooms out. Hearings, an investigation team, Star Bridges at a larger scale, and the old philosophers' question of where the universe ends. The sentences stay short. The stakes stop being one federation against another and become the shape of the galaxy itself. The subtitle, Fate of the Galaxy, means it.
Do you need to reread?
No. If you finished Book I in the last few months, go straight on. If it has been longer, reread the last two chapters, Star Map Draftsman and Departure again, then start Book II.
Where to go next
Book II begins at Dark Matter Is Vanishing. The full chapter list is on the Fate of the Galaxy hub.
Haven't started yet? Turn back. Book I chapter 1 is From Earth, and both books are free and complete. For worlds and ships along the way, browse Places. Spoilers are labeled there.
One sentence
Book I teaches you the rules: the Draftsman draws dark matter, White Crystal buys power, and a father wants to go home. Book II starts by breaking the first rule. Begin at From Earth or go on to Dark Matter Is Vanishing.
