Kuiper Belt · 2059 Dawn Lucius · first contact note
In Star Map Draftsman, it’s 2059 when engineer Dawn Lucius is sent to a Kuiper Belt object that Earth had logged as a ‘meteorite’. It is really an alien ship. This is hard science fiction by Mango Taoist. Book I: Federation War is complete and free to read. Start with chapter 1: From Earth.
Why Kuiper
The Kuiper Belt sits past Neptune: cold, distant, and hard to reach on Earth clocks. In 2059, Dawn’s mission aims there. The outer solar system is not a backdrop; it is the door the story opens.
Engineer POV
Dawn Lucius is an Earth aerospace engineer and a father. He leaves for the mission with one clear wish: get home to his son Stacean. The opening chapters stay in engineer stakes (systems, clocks, supplies, orders), not franchise pastiche.
The meteorite is not a meteorite
Earth first logged the object as a meteorite. It was a spacecraft all along. A Datheon device marks Dawn as a Star Map Draftsman, and he wakes in an Orion Arm split among three federations. For immortality as governance, see White Crystal. For Book II’s dark matter stakes, see Dark matter vanishing.
